THE FIELD GUIDE

Plan a Maryland park day

A practical sequence for choosing a park, checking access, reading the forecast, and finding official visitor information.

Reviewed Oct 15, 2026 · Maryland Parks

Choose the place first, then check the details that can change the trip: the entrance, access notices, reservations, facilities, and weather.

Find the right destination

Browse the directory by county or park type. A park’s representative map point may be inside its boundary; use the official entrance directions for driving. Large parks may have several visitor areas.

Check the official visitor information

Use the managing agency’s page to confirm current hours, fees, reservations, and facility availability. If a detail is missing here, we leave it unknown rather than assuming entry is free or a facility is available.

Read the forecast and the notices

Park pages load forecasts from the National Weather Service. Forecasts describe expected weather; park notices describe documented operational changes. Read both before leaving.

Leave room for changes

Weather, maintenance, and visitor access can change after our daily source check. Keep the official park page and map available and follow posted instructions at the destination.
